Welcome to Green Sacramento County – highlighting Sacramento County’s commitment to sustainability and smart environmental practices.
Being green makes fiscal sense and we work diligently to streamline processes and protect the environment while making the best use of your tax dollar.
Sacramento County supports green industries, renewable energy, and works to implement responsible facility design, day-to-day operations and purchasing principles.
We are especially proud of our outstanding public works projects. The state-of-the-art Sacramento International Airport Terminal B achieved LEED silver certification and the newly completed Vineyard Surface Water Treatment Plant's operations building was certified as a LEED Gold project with the plant also saving millions of gallons of precious groundwater each day. As well, the County’s Animal Care Shelter was granted LEED gold certification. This designation signifies that the buildings are extremely efficient to operate, consume less energy and water, and save taxpayer money.
The Sacramento County Department of General Services has an Environmentally Preferable Purchasing policy in place to support the purchase of recycled and environmentally preferable
products, and reduce waste to minimize the environmental impacts of our
work.
Our green practices save money, energy and maintenance costs and are being used in neighborhoods across Sacramento County. Grants are funding the Streetlight Conversion Project to replace old, inefficient lighting with bright, long-lasting Light Emitting Diode (LED) lighting. The same energy-efficient technology is also being used in our street signals. The County’s waste collection trucks that are used 365 days each year operate on compressed natural gas, which significantly cuts the generation of green house gases. Our alternative fuel and hybrid vehicles are also helping to keep County fleet costs low.
It is our goal to expand and create new green projects wherever possible. Check back to see the progress we’re making and sign up for Green SacCounty updates and information!
