Update Tree Planting Guidelines to Select Wildfire-Resistant Species

Measure Summary

Selecting tree species that are wildfire-resistant and/or can thrive in fire hazard severity zones will help mitigate wildfire risk while allowing the County to continue to expand tree planting efforts that result in improved air quality and urban heat island mitigation.

Actions

Action FIRE-03-a: Consult with the Sacramento Tree Foundation and SelecTree to identify wildfire-resistant species and the appropriate species of trees for fire hazard severity zones. Incorporate such recommendations into updates to landscaping standards and tree planting guidelines in the County Code or other appropriate documents. Status: Not Started.

Status of Implementation

The Planning and Environmental Revied Division received budget in FY 24/25 to complete this Zoning Code amendment. This work will be informed by the ULI Technical Advisory grant starting in Q2 2025.
